Champlain College is growing its Maker Program and seeking a Maker Program Coordinator to lead and expand maker experiences for students, faculty, and staff. The Maker Program—part of the Library ecosystem alongside the Production Equipment Rental House— elevates the making and creative ways of knowing to help students at Champlain make the most of our experience-included curriculum. The Maker Program provides the Champlain community with access to a variety of hand, power, and electronic tools including 3D printers, laser cutters, a vinyl cutter, and sewing machines.
The Coordinator manages all aspects of the Maker Program, from leading workshops and tool trainings to maintaining equipment, supervising student employees, and collaborating with faculty to integrate maker experiences into the curriculum. This role also serves as the college's liaison to Generator, Burlington's community makerspace, coordinating shared access and preparing materials for campus use.
The ideal candidate is an experienced maker who is enthusiastic about student engagement and community building. They are comfortable leading hands-on instruction, troubleshooting equipment, and creating a welcoming, accessible environment for makers at every skill level.
Key Responsibilities
Program Management & Strategy
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Maker Program, including scheduling instruction sessions, maintaining equipment, and enforcing safety policies
- Serve as liaison between Champlain College and Generator, coordinating guest access and material preparation using the Generator membership
- Record programming, instruction, and usage data to support strategic planning for the Maker Program's growth
- Provide insight and direction to the Head of Library Academics on program needs, future opportunities, and broader experiential learning goals
Teaching & Community Engagement
- Lead workshops and tool trainings for students, faculty, and staff across skill levels
- Organize outreach events in coordination with other college departments
- Complete commissioned projects and prototypes for campus partners
Student Staff Supervision
- Hire, train, and schedule student Maker Technicians to staff the maker space during open hours
- Mentor student employees in equipment operation, safety practices, and community engagement
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required
- 1–2 years of experience in a maker space or equivalent environment, including hands-on work with rapid prototyping tools, software, and troubleshooting methods
- Trained on maker tools and safety policies (or willingness to complete training through Generator)
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and proficiency with spreadsheets
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including comfort presenting to groups
- Enthusiasm for student engagement, mentorship, and building inclusive community
Working Arrangements
- Part-time (28 hours/week, 4 days), year-round position based at our main campus in Burlington, VT, with occasional remote shifts as schedule and demands allow
- Active and varied work environment including sitting, standing, and moving throughout the day
- Occasional travel between main campus and lakeside campus; willingness to become Champlain Van certified and transport materials
- Schedule may vary slightly week to week, with occasional evening or weekend hours
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly Rate: $25.00-28.00
- Paid Time Off: 16 holidays, 4 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks sick time and 2 days of personal leave
- Retirement: Eligible to contribute to the 403(b) plan
