Whether dealing with a routine call for service or an emergency, officers utilize a solid understanding of campus operations while employing sound judgment, critical problem-solving skills, and empathy to resolve the task at hand.

Key ResponsibilitiesSafety and Security Operations
- Respond to all calls for assistance, including 911 calls and quality of life complaints (e.g., disturbances, trespasses, public intoxication, medical assists, mental health calls)
- Report on all calls, providing a detailed narrative of actions and results in a timely and accurate format
- Perform proactive vehicle, bike, and foot patrols of campus, and complete routine operational system checks
- Conduct daily lock-ups and unlocks for academic and administrative buildings, including interior and exterior checks
- Provide student welfare checks and safety escort services in and around campus, and work with local law enforcement as needed
Fire Safety Operations
- Serve as primary first responders to calls involving fire alarms, fire exit door activation, and fire evacuation drills
- Respond to all fire and trouble alarms on campus and assist the Burlington Fire Department
- Conduct daily inspection and testing of safety equipment
Relationship Building
- Foster positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, neighbors, and external agencies
- Promote open, fluid, and professional communication with all Champlain College stakeholders
- Maintain professional relationships with the Burlington Police and Fire Departments who support our campus
- Support the College's ongoing efforts to be a good neighbor with the surrounding Burlington community
- Excellent judgment
- Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts
- Driver's license required, with no more than 3 points
- Willing to train the right candidate — prior experience in public safety, security, or law enforcement preferred but not required
- Full-time, in-person position based at our main campus and lakeside office in Burlington, VT
- Rotating shift schedule required to provide 24/7 campus coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Requires regular patrol on foot or vehicle across campus grounds in all weather conditions
- Must be available to respond to emergencies and time-sensitive situations across campus
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual Salary: $21.00 - $22.42/hour
