The responsibilities include but are not limited to: Turf/Horticulture maintenance programs, improvement projects, course set up, personnel management, financial planning/management, member relations, scheduling irrigation times/responsible for irrigation maintenance, pesticide applications/recording, and keeping strong relationships with other involved departments on campus.
This is a full-time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $X - $X per year.
Core Responsibilities:
- Oversees all aspects of the maintenance and agronomic operations on the golf course and surrounding landscape daily. This includes oversight of maintenance personnel and outdoor services crews, application of pesticide and fertilizers, construction and maintenance of the grounds, irrigation, and maintenance of the turf, flowers beds, and trees on the golf course and around the clubhouse.
- Supervises and evaluates maintenance contractors and Golf Course Maintenance employees including hiring, disciplinary actions, training, scheduling, performance reviews and providing daily direction. This includes educating, training, and enforcing all rules/regulations through the college handbook, safety companies, and proper equipment videos/hands on training.
- Works closely with the Golf Pro on golf course financial matters including determining annual operating budget and financial strategy, identifying capital improvements, documenting and reporting in compliance with the annual operating budget, settlement of P-card, and invoice submitting in Middlebury Colleges Oracle finance system.
- Manages, tracks, and organizes golf course contract work including selecting vendors and contractors, obtaining and approving project estimates, communicating with representatives, placing orders and ensuring work is completed on time and to specifications.
- Responsible for maintaining inventory of all chemical application, tools, parts, and supplies as needed for optimal performance on the course.
- Works with, plans, and advises the Golf Pro on any golf course related maintenance that will affect business and or play.
- Is required to attend regular industry conferences and seminars to maintain credits for required certifications
- Documents and reports agronomic applications to the State of Vermont on an annual basis in accordance with state laws.
- Associates degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or related field preferred.
- Pesticide Applicators License required – or the ability to obtain within 6 months. Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Preferred
- Knowledge of irrigation patterns, drainage patterns, construct tees and/or greens.
- Interpersonal skills to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, officials, employees, members, and public.
- Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
- 3-5 years’ experience as a Golf Superintendent or 1st Assistant
- Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules, regulations, and method of play.
- Knowledge of management and maintenance of all equipment, tools, irrigation system, and all turf related applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping and pulling.
