Orientation Interns, in collaboration with Student Engagement Staff, provide crucial support to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of new student programs and services. Interns serve as critical links between students, leaders, staff, faculty, new students, families and the Middlebury College Community.
This is a Middlebury student Level C position paying $15.40 per hour.
Core Responsibilities:
- Interns must be able to work full time (37 hours/week) during July, August, and early September. Schedule will shift to 5-8 hours/week once classes begin and continue through the end of the fall semester
- Create, lead, and implement programs and trainings for both incoming new students and Orientation Leaders throughout the full 6 week Orientation Program
- Coordinate logistic and administrative tasks required for successful program execution
- Track all pre-arrival requirements for incoming new students
- Spearhead the Orientation Team’s online presence and communications
- Collaborate with departments and stakeholders across Middlebury to execute shared events
- Survey inventory and suggest items needed for purchase based on needs and events
- Serve as one of the primary resources regarding Orientation for campus partners and Orientation Leaders
Position Prerequisites:
- A genuine desire to create a welcoming, inclusive, and effective orientation experience for new students and families
- Ability to hold peers accountable, to be highly motivated, and to serve as a role model to orientation staff and new students
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and comfort in facilitating group conversations
- A positive attitude and an interest in learning, thinking creatively, and working as a member of a team
- Ability to work independently through projects and tasks
- High attention to detail
- Capacity to multi-task and work on several multi-step projects at once
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and assist with situations that may require discretion.
- Preferred: have previously served as an Orientation Leader, First@Midd Mentor, and/or PAL
- Preferred: familiarity with campus processes and departments
Most work will be done in an office setting. During programs, the ability to move bins and materials as well as travel to various locations across campus may be required. Middlebury Driver's License is preferred (but can be obtained after hire)
Student Employment Eligibility:
Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.
Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.
Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component.
Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.
Hour Limitations:
All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
